Description
SUMMARY:
The position is responsible for a wide range of building related services, including plumbing plan review, permit review, inspections, meetings with residents, contractors and developers to review applicable building codes. The position will primarily provide building inspection services to permit holders. This position is also responsible for ensuring the use of best building practices, code compliance and providing input on building code updates as necessary.

Enforce ordinances, regulations, statutes, laws and codes regarding building, zoning and property maintenance.
Consult with and advises residents, builders, architects, contractors and developers to ensure project compliance, responds to technical inquiries regarding code and ordinance interpretation. Performs residential, commercial, and industrial plan reviews related to plumbing.
Perform building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical inspections and writes reports regarding compliance and non-compliance.
Maintains records of building and inspection activity, and completes reports.
Assists in researching problems and complaints regarding commercial and residential buildings, building construction and code compliance.
Assists in resolving complex and sensitive customer service issues, either personally, by telephone or in writing.
Maintains records and documents of customer service issues and resolutions.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
Certification by ICC or a comparable organization as a qualified building inspector, or inspector of residential and non-residential structures.
Plumbing license preferred
Minimum six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in performing plan review and building inspection activities and ensuring compliance to codes, approved plans and specifications.
Two year post-secondary college or technical instruction, or equivalent.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of construction.
Considerable knowledge of building, plumbing and property maintenance codes and ordinances.
Frequent contact with other City employees, contractors, developers, government agencies and public; must be able to communicate verbally, make presentations and demonstrate good customer service.
Ability to analyze and interpret plans and determine whether plans conform to the provisions of applicable codes and ordinances.
Ability to comprehend complex code problems, to identify alternative solutions and prepare appropriate recommendations. Ability to influence, encourage, convince and train others.
Ability to prepare written reports; must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Excellent file maintenance and organization skills required.
Ability of handle multiple tasks simultaneously and in a timely manner.
Ability to learn, understand and adhere to all applicable safety precautions and procedures.
Assist with the administration of the permitting process, including fee assessment and collection, and permit issuance.
Attend and participate in professional group meetings and continuing education, as requested.
Keep up-to-date of new building division trends and innovations.
Assist with the front counter operations, including answering phones, as needed.
Operates all tools and equipment needed to perform job duties while adhering to all safety rules and practices.
Performs work-related tasks as assigned.
